FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HWY 19A (CLIFFE AVENUE) WIDENING – 17TH TO 21ST STREET
COURTENAY – The Cliffe Avenue widening project is cost-shared between the federal and provincial governments and the City of Courtenay through the federal project stimulus program. It will address the traffic bottle-neck between 17th and 21st Streets by providing two lanes for both north and south-bound traffic. As part of the project, an additional dedicated right-turn lane, from Cliffe Avenue to 17th Street Bridge and additional turn lanes from / to Comox Road will be constructed. Additionally, a dedicated exit lane from 17th Street Bridge to Cliffe Avenue, complete with new traffic control lights and street lighting, will be installed to greatly enhance traffic flows in this busy area.
After budget reviews and tender closing, the project is scheduled to be awarded in the next few days. Construction commencement is scheduled for next week and substantial project completion by September 30th, 2010.
Significant traffic disruption is anticipated for part of the construction period; details of the traffic management plan will be posted shortly. However, Fitzgerald Avenue will act as the primary alternative route for most of the project’s duration. Public are advised to become familiar with the traffic management plan and to allow slightly more time for their commuting plans.
