Recyling and Garbage

The following services are provided for each residential household within the City of Courtenay:

  • A basic weekly service of one 121 litre (26.6 imperial gallon) can of household refuse (no yard waste or other prohibited materials)
  • Additional garbage over the 1 can limit, up to a maximum of four 50 litre (24"x36") garbage bags will also be collected, providing each 50 litre bag has an extra garbage sticker attached. Stickers may be purchased at City Hall, 830 Cliffe Ave. for $1.75 per sticker.
  • The maximum weight in a 121 litre garbage can will be 20 Kg (44 lbs.) The maximum weight in a 50 litre garbage bag will be 16 Kg (35 lbs).
  • Weekly curbside pickup of unlimited amounts of yard waste in biodegradable/compostable bags (manufacturers stamp on each bag), kraft yard waste bags or designated lidded refuse containers no larger than 77 litres(17 Gal.) each, clearly marked and labelled “Yardwaste” or “Greenwaste”. Bags not over 16 Kg (35 lbs) and  cans not over 20kg (44lbs) in weight.
  • Bi-weekly curbside Blue Box Recycling pickup of:
    • Plastics 1 - 7, including plastic milk jugs, rinsed with lids removed.
    • Tetra Packs and Gable End cartons, rinsed and flattened (such as milk and juice cartons)
    • Plastic bags and plastic wrap. 
    • Metal food containers , rinsed with labels removed
    • Mixed Waste Paper & Bond Paper, including junk mail, envelopes and stationery. Shredded paper can be placed in a paper bag or cereal box to contain it. Please do not use a plastic bag.
    • Newspaper & Magazines, including inserts
    • Cardboard & Boxboard, remove plastic and waxed liners
    • Absolutely NO styrofoam or glass
    • Please do not place your recyclables into plastic bags. This creates a sorting issue at the depot.  The only recyclable items that are accepted in a plastic bag are other plastic bags or film wrap. Other items that are bagged will be left curbside.
    • It is acceptable to use a weight on the top of the recyclables in the blue box to contain the contents on windy days.
    • Blue Box must not exceed 40 cm (16") deep and 16kg (35 lbs)
  • To ensure pickup,  ALL WASTE must be Curbside by 8:00 a.m., including statutory holidays (other than Christmas Day and New Year's Day).

Recycling may also be dropped off at Comox Valley Regional District Recycling Centres. In the City of Courtenay these are located at:

  • Driftwood Mall
  • Home Depot
  • Walmart

These centres do accept glass.  They do not accept plastic bags or shredded paper.

The Comox Valley Waste Management Centre is the Region's landfill and recycling containers are provided for cardboard, newspaper, glass, milk jugs, plastics 1-7, batteries and metals. There is a composting site for leaves and grass clippings.

The Comox Valley Waste Management Centre in Cumberland is open seven (7) days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This includes statutory holidays with the exception of Christmas Day and New Years Day. For further landfill information, including fees, call 334-6000.
